I contacted Sigma and provided them with the lens serial number. They said the lens was not refurbished by Sigma at all. Then, I emailed Beachcamera at the same time and they said the was refurbished by Sigma and Sigma would handle my warranty claim. I don't think so. Also, the receipt does not include the lens serial number. Check that the serial number on the sticker matches the serial number at the upper right of the focus distance scale, just behind the focus ring, on your lens barrel: Sigma 60-600mm Serial Number. If you don't have this sticker or the serial number doesn't match, you got ripped off with a gray market version from another country. Lens Lines: Most Older Sigma lenses aren't designated by a model line. Lenses with 'EX' in the model name are generally considered 'pro grade.' From Sigma's website: 'The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.' Unlike cars and other larger items, the serial number on a Nikon DSLR lens can repeat on the same models. A lens serial number gives you and potential repairers a chance to look up more information about the lens you own. Sometimes the serial numbers are even used repeatedly and on different models and the length of the numbers differs.

The optical construction consists of 21 lens elements divided into 15 groups. The 9-bladed diaphragm begins at f/5 when shooting wide open, progressing towards f/6.3 at 500mm. As expected with similar long telephoto zoom lenses, optical quality drops off at the extremes of the telephoto range.

Autofocus is achieved using a moderately fast hypersonic motor for quiet operation. Additionally, all focus elements are internal so in operation the front element does not rotate or extend during focusing, which is useful when a polarizing filter is employed.
Recall[edit]
In 2010, Sigma recalled some lenses due to a 'potential autofocus defect'. Sigma offered customers a modification service, free of charge. Lenses requiring the modification were those with serial numbers between 10674301 and 10972000. Sigma lenses APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM and APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM were also affected.[2]
