• The Windows 10 generic PnP monitor driver allows the user to use any monitor without installing its dedicated driver. Although this basic monitor driver (Generic PnP Monitor driver) may function not as precise as the manufacturer’s proprietary monitor driver, but it gets the job done finely.

Instead, the Windows 10 operating system will automatically read the EDID information stored in the monitor and install Generic PNP Monitor drivers to enable its full resolution capabilities.
Graphics Card drivers can also be an issue. Make sure you have the latest drivers for video card. Check below for more details.

To confirm that Windows 10 drivers have been installed correctly check the device manager, display resolution and touch function (if equipped).
Device Manager
Windows 10 will recognize and list a 'Generic PNP Monitor' in the Device Manager. (Figure 1)
To check the device manager follow these steps:

1. Click on the Start Menu button in lower left corner and then right click on File Explorer and choose Manage.
2. Select Device Manager from the left hand margin. Scroll down until you see Monitors, then click on the arrow to expand. You should see Generic PNP Monitor as one of the items listed.

Windows 10 will only show reference to 'Generic PnP Monitor' under the monitor tab and under device manager.

Video Card Drivers

Check the Device Manager for a problem with the video card drivers. Video card drivers must also be updated to be compatible with Windows 10 to get the full functionality from the display. If there is a yellow exclamation mark under the display adapter section or if there are generic display drivers loaded, the monitor may not display the correct resolution or the monitor will not be seen as a secondary display. A message like the one below may also appear during or after updating to Windows 10. The image below displays a NVIDIA video card, but the problem can occur with any video card that does not have updated Windows 10 drivers. In this case, drivers for the systems video card must be updated. Drivers can be located from the computer’s manufacturer or the video adapter manufacturer’s website.

Display Resolution
Does the computer allow the monitors native/prime resolution in display properties?
To check the Display Properties follow these steps: (Figure 2 and 3)

1. Single right-click on an empty spot of the desktop and select Properties.
2. Select Display Settings then, Advanced display settings.
3. Check the resolution settings and make sure that the maximum resolution for the display is listed and marked as (recommended).

Touch feature
Finally, if you have a touch enabled display, does the touch feature work?
If the system has these settings then the computer has correctly read the monitor EDID and no further configuration is required.

I came across this problem from a customer who brought his computer to my attention.

He has a dual monitor setup, one HDMI to the TV and the other to the LG 23″ monitor.

All of a sudden the computer loses the correct files for the monitor and it falls back on the Generic non Plug and Play monitor driver that only maxes out at 1024 x 768 resolution. I proceeded to uninstalled this driver and attempted for a restart to see whether if this was just a hiccup; I believed Windows should be able to identify the correct driver for the monitor after the cycle. The method fails miserably and it looks as though there is something wrong with the monitor.

I plugged it into another computer and not so surprised, the monitor works just fine at beautiful 1080p resolution. I also learned that this issue seems to occur on NVIDIA GTX video cards more often than Radeon.

There are two solutions to this annoying problem. Any how, you need to update driver for your NVIDIA video card first before you go any further.

Method I

Google for your monitor driver. If you can’t find it go to the other method.

Go to Device Manager (Control Panel » System). Right click on your Generic Non-PnP Monitor and choose Update Driver Software…

Use Browse my computer… » Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer then click Have Disk… button.

Navigate to your monitor folder driver. After the system has overwritten the generic driver, you should be back to the native resolution that your monitor supports.

Method II

Go to Device Manager (Control Panel » System). Right click on your Generic Non-PnP Monitor and choose Uninstall…

Go back to Desktop, open up NVIDIA Control Panel.

If Windows pops up and installs the correct driver for you, then you are all set. If not, go back to Device Manager

Press F5 and right click on your Generic Non-PnP Monitor driver, choose Update Driver Software » Browse my computer for driver software » Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Uncheck Show compatible hardware.

On the right box of (Standard monitor types), pick the one that fits your monitor resolution and refresh rate. After the installation you should be able to use your monitor at full resolution again.

Most of the time, updating NVIDIA driver or Windows updates would already solved the problem but sometimes it doesn’t. You may also want to try different connection to your monitor, such as instead of DVI use HDMI or vice versa.
